Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has refused to comment on speculation linking the club with a move for Mathieu Flamini.
Flamini is currently without a club after being released by AC Milan
in the summer and has been training with Arsenal at their London Colney
centre. Injuries to Mikel Arteta, Abou Diaby and Thomas Vermaelen have left
the club short of players and Wenger was reported to be keen to re-sign
Flamini as cover for both the midfield and full-back positions. Reports suggested that the Arsenal boss had already offered the
French international a contract but he is remaining tight-lipped over
any deal. In his pre-match press conference he said to reporters: “He
is just here to work on his fitness and he does that very well,” he
said. “I don't say there is no chance and I don't say there is a chance
[of him joining].” Wenger's equivocal nature will no doubt frustrate Gunners fans who
are still waiting for the club's first major signing of the summer. The transfer window has been open since July 1st but Wenger claimed
after their game against Fenerbahce that the window started only after
they won. He said: "The
transfer market really starts now, a lot of activity will happen
between now and 2 September. We have 12 days. A lot will happen. It
starts now." The BBC have reported that Arsenal are in for a busy time in the next two weeks as they plan to bring in a number of big signings. Real Madrid duo Karim Bezema have been linked with moves along with Newcastle star Yohan Cabaye.
