Arsene Wenger’s side last lifted a trophy back in 2005, when they won
the FA Cup, but Ozil, who joined the north London side from Spanish
giants Real Madrid on transfer deadline day, insists Arsenal can end
their eight-year wait for silverware this season. Asked if Arsenal can win trophies this season, the Germany midfielder
told the club’s website: “Definitely. In the last few years, Arsenal
haven’t been so successful. We want to win trophies.
I think the fans
are looking forward to that too. Arsenal stunned a host of Premier League teams when the news emerged
that the club had agreed on a club record £42.4m fee for Ozil, who
joined Real from Werder Bremen in 2010 for a fee believed to be about
£12.4m, on the last day of the summer transfer window. He joins Yaya Sanogo (free agent from Auxerres), Emiliano Viviano
(loan signing from Palermo) and the returning Mathieu Flamini from AC
Milan in the new look Arsenal. “We have a very strong and a very young team that can improve a lot
under the manager. I think we will win trophies because we have the
potential (to do so),” the 24-year-old midfielder added.
