The singer has announced a new global scholarship program, which will assist students from various countries in attaining a U.S. university education.
Citizens of Barbados, Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, Guyana, Jamaica, and the U.S. who have been accepted to four-year programs in America will qualify for the scholarships, which will come through Rih’s Clara Lionel Foundation. Those selected, based on need, will get between $5,000 and $50,000 towards their education, which can be renewed for each of the three additional years of their bachelor’s degree.
‘To be able to give the gift of an education is actually an honour,’ Rihanna says in a statement.‘Higher education will help provide perspective, opportunities and learning to a group of kids who really deserve it. I am thrilled to be able to do this.’
Applications are open now, and will be accepted until June 10, 2016. The 50 winners will be judged on ‘academic performance, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience and a personal essay’. The winners will be announced in August.
