Governor of Benue State and chairman of the federal government’s
Needs Assessment Committee, Gabriel Suswam has appealed to the Academic
Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend the ongoing strike action
in the best interest of Nigerian students.
Suswam, who stated this yesterday in Makurdi, the Benue state capital
when the leadership of the National Union of Benue State students
(NUBESS) paid him a courtesy visit, noted that the federal government
had ensured that the welfare of the striking lecturers was enhanced and
that in return, the varsity lecturers should reciprocate the gesture. According to him, “the federal government has shifted ground and so
it is expected that ASUU too should show commitment by calling off the
strike in the general interest of the students. I think the leadership
of ASUU is misleading lecturers and students. ASUU should not play
politics with the future of the students. They can call off the strike
as the needs committee continue to negotiate the matter.”
