The Gunners were in preliminary talk with Madrid over a possible £26
million deal for Di Maria, who surely would drop down the pecking
orders, should Gareth Bale sign for the Los Blancos, which is nothing
but just a formality now. Arsenal were also targeting Madrid’s star striker Karim Benzema, but
it seems they’ll have to forfeit in the chase as his agent Karim
Djaziri, has recently quashed the rumours saying his client has never
had any discussions or contact with the Gunners. Arsenal has had a disappointing transfer window so far, having failed to lure any big names, despite Arsene Wenger given a hefty transfer war-chest of £70 million. After the opening day 3-1 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa, and followed by fans’ backlash, Wenger is looking to make late incursions in the transfer market and is determined to land few quality players. The Gunners have been linked with Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata, but Di Maria seems a rather easy target, considering the circumstances in the Spain’s capital club. The situation is more-or-less similar, when Madrid signed Cristiano Ronaldo for a world record transfer fee and sold out Wesley Sneijder
and Arjen Robben. Here, they are on the verge of acquiring another top
player, on a record breaking fee, which might leave the exit door open
ajar for players of top quality like Di Maria or Mesut Ozil. However, one cannot stop wondering – is Di Maria the right player for
Arsenal at the moment? Obviously, he is young and highly talented but
do the Gunners need a right winger? The money could have been utilized
at other areas, where it requires immediate attention. The Argentine
would be a marquee signing indeed, but a shinny toy, which Arsenal could
have done without. However, it would be premature to jump the gun regarding the signing
unless the player has put pen to paper for the Gunners, there has been
far too many false alarms this window for them, another one of the same
kind is the last thing the fans would want.
