Controversy As Pastor Adeboye Voices Plans To Build 3-km Long Church

It has been recently announced by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, that the church would build a three-kilometres long auditorium in Nigeria. The statement has prompted controversy among Nigerians, with some calling the investment a “waste” and yet another confirmation that Nigerian churches are veering off the religious teachings.

Pastor Adeboye claims that the existing auditorium, built in 2000 with a capacity to sit one million people at once, could no longer accommodate millions of people who attend service.
The new auditorium which would be built at the mission’s camp ground at km 46, Lagos-Ibadan expressway would also be three kilometres wide. This will make the auditorium a humongous 9km square auditorium, and one of the top ten churches in the world in area size.
The Holy Ghost Service was one of the programmes lined up for the 61st Annual Convention of the church, and Adeboye promised that the project will start soon and will be completed before the 62nd Convention in August 2014. He solicited for donations from members toward making the project a reality.
But not long after the announcement was made public that Nigerians reacted angrily on social media with many describing churches in the country as business centres.
According to one reader, Adeboye should rather build a three-kilometre farm land and employ a million unemployed youths in Nigeria instead of wasting money on a building.
“So what impact will this have on the common man? More queues on Lagos-Ibadan Express Way, making life unbearable for travellers on Lagos-Ibadan route whenever programmes are going on,” said another reader, adding, “While I commend such vision, I think the billions of naira that will be used for such project could do the common man good if such is used to build affordable hospitals, schools, scholarships and provide basic needs for the common man.”
According to yet another user, Nigerians are hungry and unemployment rate is sky-high but churches are wasting their resources on buildings and other investments rather than tackling poverty.
“Why not use that money to build a non-profit organisation and employ our youths?” he queried.
Another reader thinks that, despite constant prayers, deliverance services and vigils in these big churches, Nigeria remains stuck in darkness and corruption.
“If they like, they should convert the whole of Oyo State and Ogun State to church there’s still nothing to show for it . No light. Even the General Overseer has more bodyguards than government officials and moves about in Helicopter/Private jet,” he said, adding that the road to Adeboye’s church is a death trap.
According to another’s opinion, “Building long auditourium means more tithe. For God’s sake, these churches can industrialise Nigeria!”
Others reckon Nigeria needs jobs and not competing in being among the largest church in the world: “We can see clearly that all the countries that have these large churches are economically stable in terms of infrastructure and job creation, unlike Nigeria that any idea by church only benefits the immediate people at the top . We read about Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, they were all farmers creating jobs for their followers and not people that expand churches.”
To one reader, religion is the bane of Nigeria: “I have said it time without number that religion is the bane of our country. Remove religion from the affairs of man and there will be peace. I have watched closely some of our colleagues who have been brainwashed to believe that prayers from the so-called men of God is all that is required to be saved,” he said, adding that church followers believe and swallow everything they are told by their pastors.
Another reader said he would not mind being given the contract for the fencing of the church.
Some say it is good news Nigerians are waking up from spritual hypnotism: “They (Nigerian pastors) are worse than armed robbers. They are con artists who are not afraid of God’s punishment. Some of Nollywood actors and actresses have also dumped acting and joined these con artists because, it is more lucrative than acting or 419 business.”

Army, SSS, Conducts Another Raid On Suspected Boko Haram Hideout In Sokoto

A hideout used by suspected Boko Haram insurgents was on Sunday night raided and a suspect, Mubarak, alias Dan Hajiya, was arrested, the 1 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Sokoto, said on Monday.
Captain Yahaya Musa, spokesman of the brigade, said at a news briefing in Sokoto that the operation was jointly carried out with operatives of the State Security Service (SSS).
He explained that the operation was in continuation of the series of raids by security agencies to rid Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states of some fleeing insurgents from volatile states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.
“Troops of the brigade have in the past few days intensified raids on the hideouts of these suspected Boko Haram terrorists.
“We have also made several arrests and investigations are ongoing; so this is the only one we can authoritatively confirm now.
“But I can, however, authoritatively confirm that there were no deaths recorded either on the side of the insurgents or the military and SSS,’’ he said.
Mr. Musa said that arms and ammunition were recovered from the house of the suspect at Nakasari area of Sokoto. He said that items recovered included three AK-47 riffles, one riot gun, 153 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunitions, explosives, three cartons of acid, knock-outs, chemicals and thermometers.
He appealed to the residents to shun rumours and urged them to sustain the tempo of support and cooperation with the security agencies.

El-Rufai Accuses Jonathan Of Dividing Nigeria Along Religious And Ethnic Lines

Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Deputy National Secretary of the newly registered All Progressives Congress (APC), Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of infusing religion and ethnicity into the nation’s politics, thereby encouraging division among people. El-Rufai also took a swipe at Vice President Namadi Sambo, describing his administration as governor of Kaduna State as a disaster, with his successor, Late Patrick Yakowa, according to El-Rufai having complained about the huge debt incurred by Sambo.
Speaking on a radio programme, “Guest of the Week” aired on the Kaduna-based Liberty FM on Saturday, the APC chieftain maintained that it was unfortunate that Jonathan who comes from a minority ethnic group was causing division among Nigerians instead of making the whole country his constituency.
According to him, it is sad that Jonathan and his political strategists thought if they introduced religion, they will be able to divide the North and take the Christian part of the region to vote for Jonathan.
“And if they introduce ethnicity, large enough does it, they will get the whole of the South. That’s their winning strategy and now they are surprised that after dividing the country they are finding it difficult to get the cooperation of everyone,” he said.
“If Jonathan is from minority, how did he get elected? Was he elected by his minority groups or by other Nigerians?
“Because if we all decided to be ethnic, Jonathan cannot even win election outside Bayelsa State because apart from Bayelsa, there is no any other place where the Ijaws are not a minority in Nigeria. So when people like Edwin Clark, Jonathan play the ethnic and religious cards, I just look at them because it is not going to work.
“The moment anyone resorts to ethnicity and religion, it is because he doesn’t have a better ground. If you are performing and doing the work of the people why do you need to resort to that?
“It is really wrong and one of the tragedies of the Jonathan leadership is that whoever inherits the leadership of Nigeria will have to spend the first or second year repairing the trust and relationship between the various ethnic and religious groups.
“Everything under Jonathan’s administration has been reduced to these two things which is unfortunate because politics is not about religion neither is it about ethnicity.
“Politics is about delivering services to the people and when you are good every ethnic group and religion will benefit.
“Our religion is private to us, our ethnicity is an accident of birth. This government have adopted that as a political strategy and by God’s grace the people of Nigeria have experienced it and knows that,” El-Rufai stated.

RCCG To Build 3-Km-long Auditorium Before August 2014

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, on Saturday said the church would build a three-kilometre long auditorium. Adeboye said this at the Holy Ghost Service which was one of the programmes lined up for the 61st Annual Convention of the church that ends today.
He said that the new auditorium which would be built at the mission’s camp ground at km 46, Lagos-Ibadan expressway would also be as wide as its three kilometres length. This will make the auditorium an enormous 9km square auditorium, and one of the top ten churches in the world.
Adeboye said that the existing auditorium which was built in year 2000 with a capacity to sit one million people at once could no longer accommodate millions of people who attend services at the camp ground.
According to him, the project will start soonest and will be completed before the 62nd Convention in August 2014.
He therefore solicited for donations from members of the church toward making the project a reality.
Testifying to God’s goodness at the convention, Adeboye said that a total of 72 babies were born at the camp between Monday and Friday.
